Die
Olympischen Spiele 1936 in Berlin wurden durch
eindrucksvolle Verfilmung von Leni Riefenstahl
dokumentiert. Olympia I.Teil-Fest der Völker: Der

From
Amazon.com:
Christopher Guest cowrote and directed this solid spoof
about the pitfalls of believing your own hype. Kevin
Bacon plays a high-minded would-be filmmaker whose
student movie wins a prestigious national award and an
invitation to Hollywood. Before he knows it, he is being
wined and dined by agents, producers, and studio
executives, who treat him like the new Orson
Welles--until he starts making his first studio movie.
Then he becomes bait for the piranha-like bottom-liners,
who teach him the unfortunate lesson that the flavor of
the week often gets eaten alive. Watch for Martin Short
as a hilariously feckless agent and Jennifer Jason Leigh
as a surprisingly chipper film student, given her
black-rimmed eyes and all-black wardrobe. --Marshall

Korean
action movies have been billed as the next big thing,
echoing the success of John Woo and Hong Kong cinema
of the Nineties, taking the concepts of Western movies
and adding a spin all of their own. Unfortunately,
Tube isn’t one of them.
The plot revolves around our hero’s vendetta against
“T”, the hijack of a commuter subway train and
sinister goings on in the government. Jay (Kim
Seok-hun) is your traditional loose cannon cop, a rule
breaker who gets the job done any way he can, mourning
the tragic death of blah-blah. He’s a cardboard
cut-out character, a mélange of every action hero to
have emerged from the last 20 years. With a film such
as this, combining elements of Speed, Lethal Weapon,
Die Hard, The Killer and The Matrix, it is not
surprising.
The romantic interest (Bae Du-na) isn’t much better,
a tearful pouting pickpocket from the streets, backing
up our hero, only to get captured later on.
Fortunately, the bad guy “T” (Park Sang-min) is
much more fun. The last remaining member of a secret
military assassin squad, trained to be a ruthless and
effective killer, he’s played with a blank coldness
that wouldn’t be out of place in an early Takeshi
Kitano movie.
Fortunately, we are treated to several notable action
sequences, involving “T” wiping out small armies
of nondescript SWAT guys and lots of Speed-style
sequences, as Jay tries to stop the train. Feeling
similar to scenes in Face/Off, or The Killer, these
encounters are sufficiently violent to keep you
interested, but lack the visceral punch of a John Woo
movie, being disjointed and poorly shot by comparison.
However, the production values are good and the CGI
sequences slick, but, as with the rest of the film,
lack anything to discern them from a normal Western
blockbuster action flick.
Tube is the equivilant of a Korean version of a Jerry
Bruckheimer production. You have the completely
over-the-top action scenes, the tortured hero, the
slushy romantic side story and the entirely
more-cool-than-the-hero antagonist.

Too old for Hamlet and too young for Lear--what's an
ambitious actor to do? Play the Devil, of course.
Jack Nicholson did it in The Witches of Eastwick;
Robert De Niro did it in Angel Heart (as Louis
Cyphre--get it?). In The Devil's Advocate Al Pacino
takes his turn as the great Satan, and clearly
relishes his chance to raise hell. He's a New York
lawyer, of course, by the name of John Milton, who
recruits a hotshot young Florida attorney (Keanu
Reeves) to his firm and seduces him with tempting
offers of power, sex, and money. Think of the story
as a twist on John Grisham's The Firm, with the
corporate evil made even more explicit. Reeves is
wooden, and therefore doesn't seem to have much of a
soul to lose, but he's really just our excuse to
meet the devil. Pacino's the main attraction,
gleefully showing off his--and the
Antichrist's--chops at perpetrating menace and
mayhem. The film was directed by Taylor Hackford
(Against All Odds, Dolores Claiborne), who provides
alternate-track commentary for the movie itself,
plus a dozen deleted scenes. Also note: due to a
settlement with artist Frederick Hart over the
movie's use of a sculpture resembling his Ex Nihilo
in Washington's National Cathedral, future releases
of the film will be altered.

A
gangster, who gets off on the pain inflicted by
his boss, is not very pleased when his boss goes
missing. Torturing his way through various people,
he aims to get to the bottom of it. He discovers
word of Ichi the Killer, perhaps the ultimate
hitman and sadist. Or maybe he's a Teenage Mutant
Ninja Turtle fetishist. Of course, the gangster --
him being the ultimate masochist -- would like to
meet Ichi. Is it as simple as that? Does the Pope
masturbate?

Dubbed
an Australian Pulp Fiction for the rave
generation, this slick, achingly-cool crime
drama is set in seedy Sydney neighborhoods not
likely found in the glossy pages of summer
Olympic tourist brochures. TT (David Field), a
violent and very wealthy drug lord, is betrayed
by his mistress Jess (pop-sensation Kylie
Minogue) and her beau Andy (Simon Lyndon), who
plan on robbing him of cash and dope.
Unfortunately, TT is hip to their scheming.
Meanwhile, rock musician Sem (Joel Edgerton) has
a vision that his girlfriend Cleo (Paula
Arundell) is in peril. Sem wants to start a new
life with her far away from the city, but his
plans are hampered by the weirdly-epicene John
(Ben Mendelsohn) who leads them astray. At the
same time, Len (Nathan Page), who works a
thankless job at a falafel stand, pines for the
fetching young lass DJ Lush Puppy (Nathalie
Roy). Finally, there's Joey (Justin Rosniak), a
rather thick kid who thinks that he's a
gangbanger straight outta Compton. His friend
Gus (Matthew Wilkinson) realizes that his buddy
has a gun and is dumb enough to use it.

but not a good life-long companion. When they are on the
ways home, they cannot catch the last bus. Then Yeon-Hee

In this action thriller based on an early story by
Stephen King, Los Angeles in the year 2017 has become a
police state in the wake of the global economy's total
collapse. All forms of entertainment are government
controlled, and the most popular show on television is
an elaborate game show in which convicted criminals are
given a chance to escape by running through a gauntlet
of brutal killers known as "Stalkers." Anyone
who survives is given their freedom and a condominium in
Hawaii, so when a wrongly accused citizen (Arnold
Schwarzenegger) is chosen as a contestant, all hell
breaks loose. Cheesy sets and a slimy role for game-show
host Richard Dawson make this violent mess of mayhem a
candidate for guilty pleasure; it is the kind of movie
that truly devoted Arnold fans will want to watch more
than once. And check those credits--choreography by
Paula Abdul!

From
Amazon.com:
An ingeniously campy and enormously entertaining piece
of fluff, View from the Top stars the impossibly lithe
Gwyneth Paltrow as Donna, a white-trash girl with
dreams of escaping her dead-end life by becoming an
international flight attendant. Her destiny is
complicated by a sweet guy (Mark Ruffalo) who just
wants to live with his family in Cleveland and by a
sister stewardess (Christina Applegate) who stabs
Donna in the back. View from the Top doesn't take
itself seriously, yet takes itself just seriously
enough--Donna and the rest of the characters treat
their absurdly candy-colored world as if it mattered.
As Donna experiences the world and improves her
fashion sense, the result is both hilarious and
hilariously touching. Also featuring Mike Myers, Kelly
Preston, and Candice Bergen as Donna's visionary
mentor. --Bret Fetzer
